2010 Philippine Presidential Race Survey

Who do you think will be the next Mayor of Marikina in 2010?

Lakan Dula

Lakan Dula
A lot of Marikenos are descendants of Lakan Dula. Because of intense persecution of the native aristocracy by the Spaniards, Lakan Dula, the King of the Pre-Hispanic Manila based in what is known today as Tondo, sent his descendants to far away places along rivers and sea routes.Several groups of Lakan Dula descendants settled along the riverbanks of what is now known as Jesus de la Pena and Calumpang in Marikina Valley and adopted hispanic sounding surnames to hide their aristocratic identities like Guevara, Flores, Santos, Mendoza,de la Paz, Estanislao, Fernando, De Guzman, etc. Some decided to maintain their native surnames revolving around the "dula" root word, adding just few letters either before or after the root word. Some others simply adopted native sounding surnames and decided not to mingle with the hispanic poblacion around the vicinity of today's Shoe Museum.

A wish of the Man behind the "Marikina Way"

"I'd like to be remembered not as a builder of infrastructures, but as a builder of character." Mayor Bayani Flores Fernando, a son of a local mayor and a mechanical engineering graduate of MAPUA who constructed one of the tallest buildings in Ayala Avenue, was later appointed as the Secretary of the DPWH and MMDA Chairman. A lot of Filipinos from all over the country are urging him to run for national office and bring with him the "Marikina Way".
